Jill Lublin: Get Noticed...Get Referrals - Author Interview

Your book Get Noticed... Get Referrals is about getting noticed, but many people are reluctant to promote themselves. How can this reluctance to self promote be overcome?

Jill Lublin: Start with what you are comfortable with then challenge that comfort zone at a rate you feel at ease with. In my book, I share many different methods of how to “get noticed”. See what resonates with you and start there.

Getting noticed means setting yourself apart from the crowd. How can this notice be achieved in a positive way?

Jill Lublin: Build on your uniqueness. Also, I find that today everyone is going so fast that they rarely give their full attention. So distinguish yourself by being completely present, especially in one-to-one situations. When you are completely present, it helps others relax because they know that you are listening to them and hearing what they say.

Every business person wants referrals, but many people are reluctant to ask for referral business, as they see it as intrusive or they are afraid of being turned down. Is there a way to ask for referrals that will get positive results?

Jill Lublin: Most people are happy to make referrals. Just clarify whether money or other compensation will be exchanged upfront. Few things can destroy a relationship faster than misunderstandings and bruised feelings relating to referral fees.

Specifically ask your referral partners if they are willing to give and expect to receive referral fees. If referral fees will be paid, clarify the amounts and how and when they will be paid. When a source and I reach agreement on referral fee terms, I send him or her a confirming email restating the terms. On every subsequent referral to or from that source, I also send an email that states the client’s name, thanks him or her for giving or taking the referral, and confirming the referral fee terms.

People want to help others, and you recommend extending help to other people. How can you help other people, and ask them to help you achieve your business goals?

Jill Lublin: One of the biggest myths is that successful people don’t ask for help. People also think that sources will not share. When people have dealt with you, trust you, like you, and believe in you, they will give you tons of information. They will trust you and share their confidences. They want you to succeed. If they are convinced that you will do a great job for their contacts, they will make your job easier because you will make them look good s well.

Business people are often very busy with day to day routines. Very often, they are working in the business rather than on it. As a result, they lose focus and passion. How can a business person maintain focus, passion, and a positive attitude?

Jill Lublin: Some will disagree with me, but I do believe passion, focus, and positivity can also be learned and increased. Here’s how:

• Surround yourself with active people. Active people tend to be curious and have a wide range of interests. They are usually open, adventurous, and eager to share. As you spend time with them, their love of involvement will rub off on you. They will introduce you to exciting new areas and encourage your quests.

• Be with interesting people. Interesting people can introduce you to stimulating new pursuits that you probably would not have discovered on your own. These new directions can energize you and expand your life. They can help you become more positive and adventurous. Interesting people will also take interest in and support your pursuits.

• Spend time with positive people. Positive people are supportive; they will encourage and help you move forward so you can achieve your objectives. When problems arise, their support will help you to move forward and keep you from becoming discouraged.

• Eliminate negative people from your life. Negative people cannot see the light so they will try to hold you back. Their doubts will get the best of them so they will not provide the encouragement and help you need to succeed. Although it’s important to examine everything with a balanced view, constant negativity is demoralizing and will eventually bring you down.

• Take chances. Nothing of value comes without risk and if you hope to succeed, sooner or later your must take chances. Otherwise, you will remain rooted in place while others pass you by. When you take chances, it can add excitement to your life and make it more fun. It can make your successes sweeter and more complete. When you begin taking risks, it can ease your fears and encourage you to take more chances. If some of the risks you take fail, identify your mistakes, learn from them, and try not to repeat them.

• Enroll in programs. Attend courses, programs, and activities that push you past your boundaries and help you get unstuck. Do something different; break the mold. I’ve taken improvisation courses that made me respond spontaneously and be completely in the moment. I tried physically challenging programs that put me in dangerous situations and forced me confront my fears. Avoid being stagnant. Take acting, singing, or dancing lessons. Learn an instrument, ceramics, or a new sport. Constantly push yourself to learn because those who constantly push lead exciting lives.

Sometimes things go wrong and mistakes are made. How can a business person become noticed as a company that takes positive action on customer concerns and complaints?

Jill Lublin: You can’t anticipate every problem; you can’t always be in control. Problems will arise that you can’t predict or prevent. When things go wrong and mistakes are made act kindly and with understanding. Your understanding could turn that person into a friend, follower, or supporter. However, if you treat mistakes harshly, they will avoid you and tell others how badly you treated them. They certainly won’t do business with you or refer others to you. In the end, business is all about people.

How can a business person become a better listener to the needs of customers, and provide even better service?

Jill Lublin: It’s a process that takes practice.

Here is what I suggest:

• Abandon your agenda and pay attention to your customers’ feedback.

• Focus on listening.

• Let others speak.

• Concentrate on what they are saying.

• Interrupt only when you don’t understand or to indicate your excitement.

• Flow with the conversation.

• Be 100% there.

These steps will make your service ratings soars!

If there were only one thing that a business person should do to become noticed, and get more referrals, what would that be?

Jill Lublin: Be yourself. Build on your assets and your uniqueness because they are really what people want. Clients and customers want you, your special viewpoint or approach; your unique insights or touch, not a weak imitation of someone else. Don’t just be a copycat; find your own voice. Get noticed in your own way; in the manner most natural and comfortable to you. Examine the approaches that others have taken and then follow what feels natural for you. Trust yourself and your instincts.

Get Noticed... Get Referrals

Build Your Client Base and Your Business by Making a Name for Yourself

By: Jill Lublin

Published: May 2, 2008
ISBN: 9780071508278
Format: Paperback, 240pp
Publisher: McGraw-Hill

Networking and referral based business enable people to work successfully with one another and achieve outstanding results, writes Jill Lublin in her powerful, idea packed book Get Noticed... Get Referrals: Build Your Client Base and Your Business by Making a Name for Yourself. The author considers getting noticed, through tireless self promotion, is the fastest and most powerful way to build your business and profits.

Jill Lublin understands that many people are uncomfortable with the self promotion, that is an essential part, of being noticed by others. She points out that many attempts at self promotion are ineffective, and shares ideas and techniques for becoming more comfortable with garnering notice. On the modern and highly competitive business environment, a business person can't sit back and wait for business to arrive at their door or website. As a result, getting noticed by others, for the right reasons, is necessary for business success. Often, gaining that positive notice is simply being helpful, providing excellent service, and listening to and helping others solve their problems.

Jill Lublin (photo left) provides a powerful step by step process for achieving positive notice that will get referral business for a company. She demonstrates how being a good listener, and being a helpful person who is open and honest, will gain attention on their own.

Once a business person moves past that initial reluctance to use self promotion as a business building tool, she moves the process to higher levels. She shares techniques for attracting powerful media attention, and how to turn that media exposure into more business opportunities. Her advanced self promotion techniques are built around a positive attitude and helping others succeed.

Jill Lublin points out that people want to help others do well in business. At the same time, they are happy to recommend good business experiences to their friends, business associates, and family members. Building strong relationships with clients and customers creates an atmosphere of trust. As a result, satisfied clients are happy to refer business to a company that provides superior service, products, and results. The author shows how to ask for business referrals, in a positive way that encourages enthusiastic recommendations, for a company and its products and services.

For me, the power of the book is the author's development of a step by step process for self promotion that is both practical and effective. The ideas presented for getting noticed and getting referrals are based on honesty, helping others, and building strong personal relationships. These techniques are ideal for any business person who fears self promotion is equated with hard selling and loud negative activity. In fact, Jill Lublin points out, that contrary to the popular myth, bad publicity is not good for a company. She stresses that a business person should attract notice and attention for doing business the right way.

I highly recommend Get Noticed... Get Referrals: Build Your Client Base and Your Business by Making a Name for Yourself by Jill Lublin, for any business person who seeking ideas to attract positive attention to themselves and their business. The book is jam packed with ideas for self promotion that even the most reluctant self promoter can use with ease and confidence.

Read Get Noticed... Get Referrals: Build Your Client Base and Your Business by Making a Name for Yourself by Jill Lublin, and your business will get noticed, and receive more referral business than you ever imagined possible.

It is imperative that writers understand the basics and the power of the business of book publishing, writes Jerry D. Simmons in his essential book What Writers Need To Know About Publishing. The author states, in no uncertain terms, that the writer must understand the influence of every person in every department who has a hand in publishing their book and especially how books are marketed and sold.

Jerry Simmons reminds his readership that publishing is a multi-billion dollar industry where sales and marketing of books are crucial to their success in business. As a result, it is vital for a writer to understand how the industry works from the inside. Jerry Simmons shares his twenty-five years of experience, in the New York publishing world, with writers to help them and their books stand out in the crowded book marketplace. With thousands of new titles being added to those already competing for buyers and for shelf space, inside information can help turn a book idea into a best seller.

Writers, who seek to become published authors, are often not aware of how many people are involved with bringing their book from manuscript to the bookstore shelves. Getting to know the right people within the publishing house not only helps the author gain better exposure for their book, but helps the publisher to market the book as well. Editors and publishing companies want their books to sell, and to sell in volume. An author who understands how books are marketed to book buyer,s and distributed through the book supply chain, can help their volume sell more copies. Knowing an author will do what is needed to sell the book is of tremendous value to the publisher.

Jerry Simmons (photo left) takes the reader through the entire process of getting a book purchased and published by a major New York publisher. He starts with meeting and understanding how agents and editors work within the industry. The author follows the book through the crucial in house steps of positioning, book lists, and book publishing calendars. Jerry Simmons guides the would be author on through the process to the sales and marketing department as they sell books to the very important book buyers for the major book store chains. Knowing the right questions to ask along the way, about this entire process, will set a writer apart from her peers.

For me, the power of the book was the inside information, about the New York publishing industry and how it really works, that leaps off every page. Jerry Simmons shares the secrets that can turn a book and its creator into a successful published author. The section on how a book is positioned on the publisher's book list is vital information for any writer. Also crucial to an author's success is understanding how the numbers in publishing, especially sales and return numbers, can make or break an author's career. This essential information makes the book a must read for any would be published author.

I highly recommend What Writers Need To Know About Publishing by Jerry D. Simmons, to anyone who seeks a publishing contract with one of the major New York publishers. By applying this must read insider information, the budding author can work productively with the publishing house, as a partner in building the book's success.

Doing Business in 21st Century India by Gunjan Bagla - Book review

Doing Business in 21st Century India

How to Profit Today in Tomorrow's Most Exciting Market

By: Gunjan Bagla

Published: July 31, 2008
ISBN: 9780446402248
Format: Hardcover, 272pp
Publisher: Business Plus

India is the world's second fastest growing economy and offers tremendous opportunities for business, writes Gunjan Bagla in his practical guide to business in the Indian Subcontinent, Doing Business in 21st Century India: How to Profit Today in Tomorrow's Most Exciting Market. While there is no single road to success in the Indian market, the author maps out a route to avoid the pitfalls that can trap the unwary business person.

Gunjan Bagla was born in India, and shares an insider's knowledge of conducting business in that complex and diverse land. The author demonstrates that business transactions in India are far beyond the stereotypical cheap labour scenario. The many opportunities include high technology, sophisticated manufacturing, as well as an enormous domestic market with a growing middle class. At the same time, doing business in India can be a financial disaster for companies who don't understand the intricacies of the Indian economy and its myriad of unique business practices.

Gunjan Bagla (photo left) describes in detail the challenges that face companies large and small who enter the Indian market. India is a huge country spanning many climatic zones, cultures, different religious beliefs, and ethnic groups. An understanding of the culture, the existing business and government institutions, and the personal nature of business relationships forms the backbone of the book.

Instead of devoting time to theory, the author provides the practical details for success in the Indian economy. The challenges of India are great, but the author guides the reader through the intricacies of Indian business life, to achieve success. The book takes managers outside of their comfort zone, and into the Indian way of life, and business style. Those unwilling to take that leap of faith will be unsuccessful, but Gunjan Bagla shares the methods and benefits of doing business in both the cities and rural areas of India.

For me, the power of the book is its practical step by step guide to Indian business practices, and how to avoid mistakes that can cripple or destroy an unwary company. With chapters ranging from cross cultural communications, to marketing, to the financial and legal systems of India, the author shares secrets to a successful business venture. Topics covered include the subtle differences in language, the various religious beliefs and customs, along with an assessment of the skill and educational level of potential employees.

Instead of simply painting only a glowing picture of untold riches ripe for the picking, Gunjan Bagla understands that business in India is not for everyone, but for those willing to shed their preconceived ideas, the rewards are enormous. In the global marketplace, the almost unlimited potential of the Indian market is simply too large to ignore.

I highly recommend Doing Business in 21st Century India: How to Profit Today in Tomorrow's Most Exciting Market by Gunjan Bagla, to any business person seeking a practical guide to conducting business in India. The book is an indispensable business manual, that is a must for inclusion in a person's luggage, when traveling to the Subcontinent.

Read Doing Business in 21st Century India: How to Profit Today in Tomorrow's Most Exciting Market by Gunjan Bagla, and discover the insider secrets to business success, in the vast and wondrous land of India.

The Secret of Transitions by Jim Manton - Book review

The Secret of Transitions

How to Move Effortlessly to Higher Levels of Success

By: Jim Manton

Published: Mar 31, 2008
ISBN: 9781931741910
Format: Paperback, 126pp
Publisher: Robert D. Reed Publishers

Waking up and seeing clearly is the beginning of transition, writes executive coaching consultant Jim Manton in his thought provoking book The Secret of Transitions: How to Move Effortlessly to Higher Levels of Success. In this deeply personal work, the author shares his personal and often painful journey of transition. He shows how his experiences can assist others in taking that all important first step into the unknown, that forms the basis of the transition.

Jim Manton approaches the crisis faced by the average person as one of lost purpose. Instead of answering the true calling of one's life, however, the natural tendency is to remain in the present. Even an unpleasant comfort zone is preferable for most people to that of the unknown. For the author, the true moment of life's transition is stepping into that void and becoming, for the moment, nothing at all. That fear of nothingness prevents most people from achieving true happiness in their lives. The book is about taking that leap of faith, without fear, into that void.

Jim Manton (photo left) serves as the reader's unflinching guide, to making the transition in life, toward reaching one's true potential in all aspects of life. Far beyond writing a financial success book, the author takes his readers on a true hero's journey. The course of action is one of the warrior, with the discarding of the fear of death and failure, to the acceptance of living life to its fullest. Combining the teaching of maintaining a positive attitude with a good old fashioned reality check, Jim Manton doesn't coddle his readers. Instead, he demands that they become the best parts of themselves writ large.

For me, the power of the book was its deeply personal story telling style. Jim Manton has lived the crises he describes and faced the void with courage. He arrived on the other side of the chasm of nothingness whole as a person who found his true calling. His teachings are those borne of personal experience and the facing down of his own demons real and imagined. The book combines practical lessons and coaching with the understanding of the imperative of dreaming of the ideal life. That personal hero's journey forms the backbone of the work, with the lessons filling in the spaces between the ribs.

I highly recommend The Secret of Transitions: How to Move Effortlessly to Higher Levels of Success by Jim Manton, to anyone with the courage to face the journey between the partial life that exists today, toward the true calling beyond the emptiness. The author challenges the readers to empower themselves, to step into the lives that represent their true natures, without fear.

Read The Secret of Transitions: How to Move Effortlessly to Higher Levels of Success by Jim Manton and break away from your comfort zone and achieve the greatness that lies within everyone.

What Can a Dentist Teach You About Business, Life and Success?

Discover Secrets to Achieving TOTAL SUCCESS!

By Dr. Joe Capista

Publishing Date: 2008
ISBN 978-0-9658159-5-6
Format: Paperback 202 pages
Publisher: Maxwell Publishing

Dreams and desires can sometimes be more powerful than skills and intelligence, writes Dr. Joe Capista in his inspiring book What Can a Dentist Teach You About Business, Life and Success?: Discover Secrets to Achieving TOTAL SUCCESS!. The author demonstrates how success means a balanced business and personal life, and how personal relationships with others, are crucial to what he calls total success.

Dr. Joe Capista is a successful dentist by any standards, but he began his practice from modest background. With the understanding that his practice was a people business, and not the dental profession, the author turned giving to others and sharing their concerns into success. Along the way, he received valuable and advice and support of mentors and others who helped him on his way. He repaid that gift by helping others in turn. Sharing the gifts of wisdom and understanding with others has led Dr. Capista to an even more successful life.

Dr. Joe Capista (photo left) is a man with a vision. His powerful and life changing advice of achieving your dreams can be applied to any business or profession. That insight is the lesson he shares as a dentist. His visionary approach to life and business personifies how goal setting is vital to overall success. The goals must remain aligned firmly to your core values, but the techniques applied to their achievement can and must evolve over time.

The achievement of goals requires discipline and commitment as well as constant striving for excellence, writes the author. As a result, he suggests very practical and useful systems for marketing your business, as well as yourself. The techniques are processes that can applied to any sales or marketing situation, so they are helpful for any business or professional organization. The systems take the guesswork out the sales and marketing function, and keep the business operations running smoothly.

For me, the power of the book was the combining of success and goal oriented principles with practical systems for their implementation. The author writes in plain language, and explains his concepts in easily understood terms. The message is part of his emphasis on clarity, and in helping others to understand his ideas. The hands on approach to goal achievement, through learning from others, and for always seeking to improve and become the best, is a central message of the book. The result is a powerful, and useful format to a balanced and successful life.

I highly recommend What Can a Dentist Teach You About Business, Life and Success?: Discover Secrets to Achieving TOTAL SUCCESS! by Dr. Joe Capista, to anyone seeking an easy to understand book on achieving success in business and in life. The straight talking style presents the techniques that empower you to put your dreams into action, in a step by step manner.

Read What Can a Dentist Teach You About Business, Life and Success?: Discover Secrets to Achieving TOTAL SUCCESS! by Dr. Joe Capista, and start your personal journey to a successful and balanced life, regardless of your business or profession.
