The Ultimate Practice Building Book by David W. Zahaluk, MD - Book review

The Ultimate Practice Building Book

How To Regain Control Of Your Practice, Achieve A Competitive Advantage In Your Local Market, And Reconnect With The Joy Of Medicine In The New Healthcare Economy

By: David W. Zahaluk, MD

Published: Dec 21 2007
Format: Paperback, 106 pages
ISBN 1-4251-3639-7
Publisher: Trafford Publishing

"Taking responsibility for your practice's success is the first step", writes physician and founder of Maximum Income For Physicians David Zahaluk, MD, in his medical practice building book The Ultimate Practice Building Book: How To Regain Control Of Your Practice, Achieve A Competitive Advantage In Your Local Market, And Reconnect With The Joy Of Medicine In The New Healthcare Economy. The author demonstrates the power of marketing, systems, and proven business techniques to add more patients, work less, and earn more money in a medical practice.

David Zahaluk understands that medical doctors often have little or no hands on business training. As a result, their practices don't develop to their full potential as successful businesses. The author establishes from the very beginning of the book that the doctor, as owner of the medical practice, is responsible for its profitability as a business and for the proper management of its staff. At the same time as the practice is growing, and becoming more established in the community, the doctor is also able to care for the health of more patients.

David Zahaluk, MD (photo left) recognizes that a well run medical practice benefits everyone including the doctor, the staff, and the patients. A medical practice, run as a business, not only generates more income for the doctor and ensures that the staff is also well paid, but also frees up time for more personal patient care. A doctor, whose office runs on turn key type systems, can be left in the hands of the staff while the doctor works with more patients. At the same time, the doctor, as owner of the business, can take more time away from the practice for speaking, teaching, recreation, and family events. A well run practice creates a balanced life for all concerned.

For me, the power of the book is David Zahaluk's application of well established principles of marketing, branding, operational systems, and management to the medical practice. The author's insistence that the doctor take a more business oriented approach to the medical practice keeps the office viable and open for needed patient care. The author effectively changes the entire mindset of the doctor, from one of a doctor on staff, to one of owner of a successful professional business. That crucial step is essential for any medical professional to achieving financial freedom, whole enhancing patient care.

I highly recommend the practical guide to developing a medical practice as a successful business The Ultimate Practice Building Book: How To Regain Control Of Your Practice, Achieve A Competitive Advantage In Your Local Market, And Reconnect With The Joy Of Medicine In The New Healthcare Economy by David Zahaluk, MD, to any medical professional seeking to improve their income, operate a more successful medical practice, and enjoy a better quality of life. Not only does the doctor, as owner of the business benefit, but the office employees and staff physicians gain security of employment and income as well. Patients who choose the medical practice as their healthcare provider also benefit from better health and more personalized care.

Read the medical practice changing book The Ultimate Practice Building Book: How To Regain Control Of Your Practice, Achieve A Competitive Advantage In Your Local Market, And Reconnect With The Joy Of Medicine In The New Healthcare Economy by David Zahaluk, MD, and develop the medical practice of your dreams. Instead of long hours, low profitability, and less time for enjoying life, the author provides the tools for positive control of a growing medical business. The book is a power tool for building greater personal satisfaction while caring for the health and well being of others.

Jim Muehlhausen: The 51 Fatal Business Errors - Blog Business Success Radio

Listen to Wayne Hurlbert on Blog Talk Radio

Business Adviser and author of the conventional wisdom challenging book The 51 Fatal Business Errors and How to Avoid Them, Jim Muehlhausen, gets straight to the point about the fatal mistakes that are killing your business. He describes the most common errors and offers a solution for them all. In no nonsense language, he cuts to the heart of what ails a business and offers some powerful cures. If you have lost track of your company vision, Jim Muehlhausen will get your company back on track.

Jim Muehlhausen is my internet radio show guest on Blog Business Success; hosted live on Blog Talk Radio.

The show airs live on Thursday, June 25, at 8:00 pm Eastern Time; 5:00 pm Pacific Time.

Business Adviser and author of the conventional wisdom challenging book The 51 Fatal Business Errors and How to Avoid Them, Jim Muehlhausen, gets straight to the point about the fatal mistakes that are killing your business. You will learn:

* Why conventional business wisdom is often very wrong

* How to avoid the fatal errors that can doom your business

* How to become a great CEO of your growing company

* How to take positive action to build a growing, successful company

Jim Muehlhausen (photo left) has been a business owner since he was nine years old. Alright, selling pens to his classmates might not qualify as a business, but Jim is a born entrepreneur and had the good fortune to grow up in an entrepreneurial family. Jim’s grandfather created one of the largest spring manufacturing companies in the U.S., and from a very young age, Jim participated in the company, learning the inner-workings of business in his teens.

Jim graduated from Valparaiso University with a B.S. in Accounting, passing the CPA exam while still in college. Jim had always planned to go to work in the family business.

Ten years after graduating from Indiana University Law and passing the bar exam, Jim admitted that he only went to law school so he wouldn’t have to be an accountant — once an entrepreneur always an entrepreneur — but after one semester of law school, Jim was bored stiff. He decided to purchase a franchise, and he chose Meineke Discount Mufflers, despite knowing nothing about cars and lacking even a lick of mechanical ability. At twenty-two years of age, Jim found himself having to talk the President of Meineke himself into taking his franchise fee. Jim ended up with three successful locations and sold the businesses for a healthy profit.

Jim then started a manufacturing company and ran it for nine years. In 1999, Jim’s company was honored by Inc. Magazine and Michael Porter from Harvard Business School as the 53rd fastest growing company in the Inc. ICC 100. Jim sold the company a year later and actually took a job with an enterprise software company.

Jim then entered the CEO coaching business. Over the past eight years, Jim has personally coached hundreds of business owners in over 2500 face-to-face coaching sessions and has clients in North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

The 51 Fatal Business Errors by Jim Muehlhausen - Book review

The 51 Fatal Business Errors and How to Avoid Them

By: Jim Muehlhausen

Published: April 25, 2008, 3rd edition
ISBN-10: 0981608205
ISBN-13: 978-0981608204
Format: Paperback, 192 pages
Publisher: Mulekick Publishing

"I want to move past the temporary excitement of a new idea and into permanent gain created by making meaningful, lasting changes", writes management adviser Jim Muehlhausen in his conventional wisdom challenging book The 51 Fatal Business Errors and How to Avoid Them. With an iconoclastic style, that is long on practical advice, and short on the usual platitudes, the author turns the small business owner or manager into an effective CEO.

Jim Muehlhausen understands that much, if not most conventional wisdom surrounding business management is detrimental to the health and growth of the company. The author presents a series of what he considers fatal errors, organized into groups, that teach what he calls the School of Hard Knocks. Each of the fifty-one mistakes is described, along with a real world example of the error, and followed up by a solution. The format provides for easy reference, and a refresher course, in the event that conventional wisdom attempts to creep back into the CEO's thinking and management. Each chapter becomes an action plan, with an accompanying "Mule-kick" to jolt the reader into action.

Jim Muehlhausen (photo left) recognizes that many business books, and much of the advice given to CEOs is for large corporations. The author's goal is to turn every small business CEO into a great business builder and agent for growth. Because the author believes that every CEO has the potential for greatness, the book is designed to challenge, extract, and develop that innate talent. To that end, Jim Muehlhausen moves the reader far outside their comfort zone, creating the conditions for organizational change. The writing style is punchy, often humourous, and never dull, making it ideal for a busy CEO.

For me, the power of the book is twofold. First of all, Jim Muehlhausen takes a no nonsense, direct approach to challenging conventional wisdom. Many of the author's recommendations are in direct opposition to the usual business management practices. That iconoclastic technique, that forces the reader to examine every aspect of standard business thought, creates an environment for positive change. The second power of the book is the real world example, placed in every chapter. Every one of the fifty-one errors has a real world example, and each mistake has a powerful solution, presented for consideration by the CEO.

I highly recommend the thought provoking book The 51 Fatal Business Errors and How to Avoid Them by Jim Muehlhausen, to any small business CEO who truly wants to build and operate a superior business. The book covers all areas of business from personnel management, to sales and marketing, to financial management, to daily operations. At the end of the book is a section of "Mule-kicks", to encourage the CEO take positive action, toward applying the principles described in the book.

Read the action oriented book The 51 Fatal Business Errors and How to Avoid Them by Jim Muehlhausen, and become a business changing CEO, focused on building a growing company, with the best people, that achieves its full potential for greatness.

Joey Asher: How To Win A Pitch - Author interview

Your book is titled How to Win a Pitch: The Five Fundamentals That Will Distinguish You from the Competition. What do you mean by that term "win a pitch"?

Joey Asher: A pitch is a sales presentation. It's where you stand or sit before a prospect and give a presentation seeking their business. The book tells you everything you need to know to create and deliver sales presentations that win business.

What are the most frequent mistakes business people make when delivering a sales presentation?

Joey Asher: I see two mistakes more than anything else.

First, too few presentations propose solutions to business problems. Most presentations are "capabilities presentations" or "dog and pony shows" where you talk about your offerings generally. But these types of presentations fail to address the thing that the prospect cares most about -- a solution to a serious problem facing their business.

Second, too few sellers rehearse their presentations. A well-rehearsed presentation is easy to spot and it says a lot of good things about you and your company. When I speak with people who hear a lot of presentations, they tell me that they can always tell who has rehearsed and who hasn't. It's obvious. So if you want to stand out from your competition, you'll rehearse.

How can a business person focus better on solving the business problem of their customers and clients?

Joey Asher: The most important thing you can do is to spend time before the presentation chatting with the prospect to understand his or her key business challenges. The more work you put in prior to the presentation, the better you'll be able to show up at the pitch and give a presentation that proposes a serious solution.

Joey Asher (photo left)

Why are so many astute business people so uncomfortable making presentations to potential clients regardless the organization size?

Joey Asher: Public speaking is scary for many people. It feels unnatural to stand up in front of people and be judged. So people shy away. They key to overcoming this anxiety is rehearsal and experience. The more you rehearse, the more you'll be able to overcome your anxiety. The more experience you have, the less anxious you'll get in the first place.

How can the presentation made by a business person be modified to focus on the solution that only the presenter's company can provide?

Joey Asher: The basic model for a solution-oriented message is to start by briefly detailing the business problem. Then you outline your solution. We recommend boiling down your solution to three key points. But you can have lots of sub-points. The more detailed your proposed solution the better. You want to make the presentation sound like you've done a huge amount of work coming up with a specific plan for their specific challenge.

How important is it to show real passion in a presentation, especially when many business people have been taught to take the opposite dispassionate approach?

Joey Asher: Passion is critical. If you're good at what you do, then there is a good chance that you're competing against other very good firms. And there's a good chance that those other firms can also do a good job. Passion is one of the keys to making you stand out. That passion gets your prospect excited about your ideas and helps build the personal relationship that helps win the business.

What is next for Joey Asher?

Joey Asher: I plan to continue helping our clients create and deliver presentations that connect with listeners and win business.

How To Win A Pitch by Joey Asher - Book review

How to Win a Pitch

The Five Fundamentals That Will Distinguish You from the Competition

By: Joey Asher

Published: May 2009
ISBN: 9780978577612
Format: Paperback, 264pp
Publisher: Persuasive Speaker Press

"My experience has shown that with the proper preparation and planning, you can greatly increase your chance of winning a pitch", writes successful coach and speaker Joey Asher in his simple guide to helping achieve more sales How to Win a Pitch: The Five Fundamentals That Will Distinguish You from the Competition. The author shares his powerful, and highly effective process for boosting the sales totals for any organization.

As a communications and selling skills coach, Joey Asher understands the importance of developing and utilizing a repeatable sales format. He focuses on the important fundamentals of a great sales presentation as the key to outperforming the competition. Those five fundamentals are:

* Focused on a business solution
* Simply organized
* Delivered with passion
* Interactive
* Well rehearsed

Each of the five sections of the book describes the essential elements of each sales presentation fundamental. The author also points out why each part of the sales process is crucial, and how each element of the presentation works in conjunction with the other sections. Joey Asher adds stories from his own sales experience that illustrate each fundamental in action, underlining its importance for the sales representative

Joey Asher (photo left) recognizes the need for an organization to stand out from its competition, regardless of the industry. To gain new customers and clients, in today's highly competitive marketplace, a company must focus on getting its sales presentations done effectively. Failure to give an effective pitch can mean much more than lost sales. A lower market share and less cash flow will have a negative effect in the business bottom line, or even result in the demise of the company. Effective sales presentations, using the proven fundamentals shared by Joey Asher, can transform a company's sales presentations from marginal to spectacular.

For me, the power of the book is in its simple, yet powerful understanding of the importance of a great sales presentation. By emphasizing the essential elements of a highly effective sales pitch, Joey Asher creates a system that helps a company's presentations stand out from those of the competition. At the same time, the fundamentals are repeatable and teachable to everyone in the organization, multiplying their effectiveness. With the fundamentals well in place, sales representatives will have more confidence in themselves, their products and services, and the company. That confidence boost will translate into more sales and potential industry dominance.

I highly recommend the practical and effective sales building book How to Win a Pitch: The Five Fundamentals That Will Distinguish You from the Competition by Joey Asher, to anyone seeking to transform their sales results from ordinary to outstanding. The five fundamentals of great presentations are easy to learn and apply, and will win more sales for the company.

Read the amazingly simple techniques taught in How to Win a Pitch: The Five Fundamentals That Will Distinguish You from the Competition by Joey Asher, and connect with your prospects in ways never before possible. Learn to focus on solutions for the customer, backed by the author's fundamentals, and watch your sales numbers soar.

The Genius Machine by Gerald Sindell - Book review

The Genius Machine

The 11 Steps That Turn Raw Ideas into Brilliance

Author: Gerald Sindell

Published: April 2009
ISBN: 978-1-57731-650-3
Format: Hardcover, 160 pages
Publisher: New World Library

"This book is about a third kind of thinking, one that is directed toward improving an existing idea, thinking through a complete issue, or creating something new", writes Thought Leaders International founder Gerald Sindell, in his powerful guide to creative thinking and idea development The Genius Machine: The 11 Steps That Turn Raw Ideas into Brilliance. The author presents a brilliant eleven step system that creates, develops, and completes the idea building process with simplicity and elegance.

Gerald Sindell understand the importance of ideas and creative thinking in all areas of life. While many books on creative thinking focus on the business aspects of creativity, the author takes a more holistic approach to the subject. He begins with a powerful insight into the nature of thinking. By describing thinking in terms of making distinctions, no matter how minute and subtle, Gerald Sindell challenges his readers to reexamine their way of looking at and seeing the world. Once those distinctions are realized and understood, an entirely new range of possibilities presents itself.

Gerald Sindell (photo left) turns thinking into an organized system. He guides the reader through the entire eleven step process from identifying the problem to be solved, and establishing what will be a successful result, all the way through to the final fully formed idea. Geralk Sindell recognizes that careful planning and goal identification, from the very beginning of the process, will keep the project on course. Even a slight change in how the goal is stated, can cause the process to veer off in an entirely different direction. The process prevents wasted time by establishing clear goals and time frames in advance.

For me, the power of the book is two fold. The first strength of the book are the author's insights into the nature of thinking and the creative process. Through understanding how we approach and think about problems and ideas, we can delve more deeply into finding real solutions. When we learn to see the world in a different way, we are already well on the way to generating powerful ideas. The other power of the book is the author's development of a powerful, repeatable eleven part system for creative thinking and problem solving. Instead of leaving the creative process to chance or partial measures, Gerald Sindall shares how to take an idea, as intellectual property, from its vague inception, to a fully formed idea.

I highly recommend the thought changing book The Genius Machine: The 11 Steps That Turn Raw Ideas into Brilliance by Gerald Sindell, to anyone seeking to improve their own creative thinking or that of an organization. The powerful eleven step system is has the strength of adaptability to any problem or partially formed concept.

Read the powerful and practical The Genius Machine: The 11 Steps That Turn Raw Ideas into Brilliance by Gerald Sindell, and never worry about taking vague, half formed ideas to a successful conclusion again. The system takes care of the creative process, freeing you to think of more world changing ideas.

Why Socrates Died by Robin Waterfield - Book review

Why Socrates Died

Dispelling the Myths

By: Robin Waterfield

Published: May 26, 2009
Format: Hardcover, 280 pages
ISBN: 978-0-7710-8851-3
Publisher: McClelland & Stewart

"Socrates' trial was a critical moment in ancient Athenian history, and so provides a very good lens through which to study a complex and perennially fascinating, somewhat alien society", writes classical scholar Robin Waterfield in his intriguing and enlightening book Why Socrates Died: Dispelling the Myths. The author recreates the social, political, and legal life of ancient Athens, Greece in the 5th Century BCE, in a manner that brings the ancient world to life and relevance to the modern reader.

Robin Waterfield recognizes that many myths have evolved over the centuries since Socrates' famous trial, conviction, and death by drinking hemlock in 399 BCE. In order to understand how and why the legendary Athenian philosopher was brought to trial, and how he was convicted, the author takes the reader on a journey into the tumultuous society of ancient Athens. Robin Waterfield describes how the legal system worked, and how trials were conducted and verdicts delivered as a result. Because the legal system was based more on personal opinion, and less on evidence as we understand it, the trial of Socrates depended heavily on Athenian politics and social mood. Socrates' past political connections, and his unpopular acquaintances were as much a part of his trial as the actual charges.

Robin Waterfield (photo left) describes the ebb and flow of democracy and of oligarchy, as they were understood in ancient Athens, as having a major influence on the trial of Socrates. Because Socrates was a known teacher and friend of many notorious opponents of democracy, his days were numbered when a brief but oppressive oligarchy was removed from Athenian politics. Identified, rightly or wrongly with the oligarchs, Socrates became a target for supporters of democracy. At the same time, that author describes how cultural and social mood shifts turned the winds of change against the teachings of Socrates as well. Indeed, as the author makes clear, the trial, conviction, and execution of Socrates was almost inevitable.

For me, the power of the book is its vivid recreation of the political, legal, moral, and social culture and thought of ancient Athens in the 5th Century BCE. Using the trial of Socrates as a backdrop for the greater social and political forces at work in a changing Athenian society, the author paints a well rounded picture of life in that long ago place. The narrative history is well researched, and suited to historical scholars, while maintaining the interest of the modern casual reader. Indeed, the author provides many direct and powerful comparisons between Athenian thought and society, and that of the modern world.

I highly recommend the fascinating and page turning history Why Socrates Died: Dispelling the Myths by Robin Waterfield, to both professional scholars and amateur historians for its powerful reconstruction of Athens in th4 5Th Century BCE. The author's vivid descriptions of the intriguing people and major events that shaped that world, and how the forces of societal change sealed the fate of Socrates, is fascinating reading for anyone.

Read the wonderful history Why Socrates Died: Dispelling the Myths by Robin Waterfield, and move back in time to a place, that while seemingly very different from ours, planted the seeds of what became Western society and the modern world.

Thank God It's Monday! by Roxanne Emmerich - Book review

Thank God It's Monday!

How to Create a Workplace You and Your Customers Love

By: Roxanne Emmerich

Published: April 2009
ISBN-13: 9780138158057
Format: Hardcover 192pp
Publisher: FT Press

"The most exciting part is that positive, measurable changes that really matter can begin in a single day", writes management consultant and best selling author Roxanne Emmerich in her business culture changing book Thank God It's Monday!: How to Create a Workplace You and Your Customers Love. Going far beyond the concept of having fun at work, the author demonstrates how creating a company where employees like one another and where genuine engagement with customers takes place, leads to greater profits and better morale. Fun is a byproduct of that revamped company culture.

Roxanne Emmerich understands that simply talking about creating a happier, more functional workplace won't change anything. Instead, she offers real life stories of successful businesses, and practical techniques that any company can employ to transform their entire organization. That sea change in attitude toward other employees, and toward customers and clients, not only makes for a happier workplace, but a more profitable company. Roxanne Emmerich points out that customers can tell instinctively if a business culture is dysfunctional. They can see the internal conflict, and that negative attitude is reflected in the employee interaction with customers. On the other hand, good companies get glowing referrals and repeat business, as the word of a wonderful customer experience spreads far and wide.

Roxanne Emmerich (photo left) recognizes the power of one person to make powerful and lasting changes in a company's culture. In many of the stories presented in the book, the actions of one employee who decided to make a difference, resulted in a complete reinvention of the entire organization. The idea of being a positive force for change doesn't have to come from top management. The change in attitude toward other employees and customers can start anywhere in the company, at any level, and in any job. The results of one person deciding to make a difference spread to other employees as well. Success builds even more success. When changing the company culture creates a new way of treating one another and the business customers, the results are tangible and repeatable.

For me, the power of the book is the message that any company can improve its corporate culture and its engagement with customers. Not only can the entire organization learn to treat each other and its clients better, but one person can start the entire process in motion. When the vision of building a great workplace loved by employees and customers takes root, the rewards are a happier work environment and a stronger bottom line. Another strength of the happier business concept is how positive change can take place immediately. A commitment to improving staff relations and customer engagement have almost instant payoffs.

I highly recommend the company culture transforming book Thank God It's Monday!: How to Create a Workplace You and Your Customers Love by Roxanne Emmerich, to anyone who is serious about building a functional and dynamic workplace that values both employees and customers. The book provides the tools and inspiration to develop and build a positive work environment. At the same time, the author shares real world examples, of the successful transformation of organizations from dysfunctional unpleasant places to work or shop, into engaging and more profitable companies.

Read the inspirational and visionary book Thank God It's Monday!: How to Create a Workplace You and Your Customers Love by Roxanne Emmerich, and take that first step toward building a company loved by both its employees and its customers. Instead of employees plodding toward the weekend, their attitudes will switch to excitement that it's Monday, and time for an exciting week at a great company.

Doing Business By The Book by Sophfronia Scott

Doing Business by the Book

How to Craft a Crowd-Pleasing Book and Attract More Clients and Speaking Engagements Than You Ever Thought Possible

By: Sophfronia Scott

Published: Nov 1, 2008
Format: Paperback 156 pp
Publisher: Advantage Media Group

"When you don't publish a book, when you don't take full advantage of the knowledge and experience that it has taken you years to accumulate, you are leaving a serious amount of money on the table", writes editor, author, and coach Sophfronia Scott in her practical and inspirational book Doing Business by the Book: How to Craft a Crowd-Pleasing Book and Attract More Clients and Speaking Engagements Than You Ever Thought Possible. The author presents a no nonsense case for why writng a book creates a powerful business attractor, how to plan the strategy and purpose of the book, and how to write successful books over and over again.

Sophfronia Scott understands the power of books for establishing the author's credentials in any industry or on any topic. She points out that every business person possesses a huge storehouse of information that can be turned into a book. The author addresses concerns about over saturated book markets, time requirements for writing, and even fears of bad reviews deftly and always with an eye toward helping the would be author become a success. Because the goals and experience of every potential author are different, each book takes a different approach to what appears on the surface to be the same material. In that sense, every book is unique and offers something very different from the other titles in the field.

Sophfronia Scott (photo left) recognizes that writing a book is an important task, and she is aware of the time factor involved. As a result, she takes the bold but very important step, of advising would be authors to create a strategy for developing and marketing the book prior to putting fingers to the keyboard. With the goals of the book in place, the author can then craft a book that addresses those points. For Sophfronia Scott, a book is a powerful lead generation tool that adds crucial credibility and authority to the author's business. With the published book as a calling card, the author has an important perceived authority advantage over competitors who lack a book title to their name.

For me, the power of the book is the practical hands on approach to writing a book, as presented by Sophfronia Scott. By guiding the would be author through a strategy session, that develops the ultimate goals and target readership for the book, Sophfronia Scott saves the business person valuable time and resources in the process. Once the target audience is identified and the reason for writing the book are established, Sophfronia Scott provides a powerful, very repeatable outline technique that can be used over and over again for writing many more books. The lessons for writing additional titles, even if on vastly different topics, are essential reading for any would be authors.

I highly recommend the easy to read, yet very powerful book Doing Business by the Book: How to Craft a Crowd-Pleasing Book and Attract More Clients and Speaking Engagements Than You Ever Thought Possible by Sophfronia Scott to anyone who is thinking about writing a book, but feels they lack the time or expertise to do so. The author provides powerful business reasons for authoring a book, how to establish a marketing strategy, and a template for the actual writing process that is usable for many additional titles.

Read the business building book Doing Business by the Book: How to Craft a Crowd-Pleasing Book and Attract More Clients and Speaking Engagements Than You Ever Thought Possible by Sophfronia Scott, and never worry about finding clients, customers, or speaking engagements again. If you follow Sophfronia Scott's proven advice, your book and your reputation as a published author, will do much of the marketing work for you.
